Gene,

You say that all you leave behind is a hoe with a shiny handle. That in itself is a fitting tribute to you, but I dare say you leave a legacy. You have inspired many, taught a few, and led by example. I know that I am a better person for having known you.

I can only hope to make such a mark on our crazy world.Keep your hand to the hoe and pen my friend, our world needs you and you need the soil.

Can I live with you? I don't think there's any way I can make the yard where I live sound so blessed.

I can say I've had wonder come rolling over me a few times, however. Like when the entire yard erupted in white clover. All at the same time. How despite our best efforts nearly everything we put into the ground took root, grew and mostly flourished. I still shake my head over that one. We had no idea what we were doing. Obviously, nature does and is pretty tenacious about it.

It took most of the season but my head finally came around to the Great Garden idea. Reading this section from your book helped give it more shape. Thank you!

Bless you, Baklava Queen. Writing is a strange occupation. I wrote this nearly a generation ago and no one said anything, far as I can remember. Now comes word... from another generation. I feel like Rip Van Winkle. Gene Logsdon
