I'm under the impression that it is ok to spell out the other four letter word for dung if you use an asterisk, as in 'shit*.'
Speaking of which, Gene was too shy to mention humanure. I try to subtly mention how important this aspect of the Big Picture is at www.methownaturalist.com/page16.html

My dog-eared copy of Two Acre Eden is now 36 or so years old and has been read numerous times by me for witty inspiration, guidance for existing in concert with nature. Definitely one of my most valuable books. Thanks for writing it so long ago.
Funny thing, it truly is more relevent today than ever.

"Waste" is a resource in the wrong place. I've been fighting rocks all summer in a new garden. I'm coming around to the idea that they'll be useful for something if I can figure out what... maybe thermal mass in my winter garden?

Oh, weeds just come. I think the newspaper would probaby sprout weeds, too! Our asparagus patch is a disaster after 20+ years of adding composted manure and leaves. We're starting a new bed. Gene's asparagus is immaculate with leaf mulch a foot high! But I know it wouldn't work for us. That's the beauty (and frustration!) of gardening. What works for one person won't work for another. Heck, what works for one season, won't work for another! Happy gardening!!

You have to make sure you use newspaper underneath the grass clippings.

Has anyone ever had trouble with introducing weeds into the garden through the grass clippings? We did grass clipping mulch one time and the rest of the summer was a major battle with weeds. We swore never to do that again.

Mara, the weed and feed applications contain herbicides for the weeds, and yes, if you use the clippings in your garden when the grass is still fairly fresh, you can have some bad effects. I killed some tomatoes that way once. Didn't kill them all the way but they never grew right after that. Gene Logsdon
