My favorite money saving tip when it comes to lawns is to not use grass at all. There are plenty of alternatives out there. The best one being dichondra. It is easy to grow and doesn't need to be mown all the time. I have it growing as a lawn in my front garden. Its the best thing i have ever done.

I enjoyed this informative and encouraging article, but would like to point out that creosote oozing out of old railroad ties does more than merely stain clothes and carpets; it is carcinogenic and has never been recommended for domestic use.
all the best!

Somebody should do a page on this site that tells the history of lawns, and how the American people got sucked into having them in the first place! Did they come from European tradition, of the poor, or middle classes? Why grass? Can we replace pesticide and herbicide soaked soils under lawns, or at least wash the poisons away before we plant food crops? If we planted potatoes in place of lawns could we make enough Vodka to run SUV's? relieve the imported oil pressure on our economy? get plastered, every one of us, and not give a damn? Export fuel to Canada? Mexico? Who knows what the real possibilities are? Locally grown crops take less transport but are labor intensive - so rent out your lawn to unemployed folk for gardening, and eat fresher local stuff too? Not like corporate living and factory working folk anymore, now that China has off-shored most those jobs, can we at least do aquaponics for our fish-burgers and fries, with a side of lettuce? The "American Dream" is convulsing from pressures to change, the "Earth-ship" homes will replace the McMansions as sure as Pontiacs and the merry Oldsmobiles are fading into the sunset, and my bet is the large decorative 17th Century British tradition for the Uber-rich of a time gone by, will fade into obscurity as soon as we realize the true value of the precious land they occupy! Gentlemen, Start your roto-tillers!
