Looks like it's been at least a year since the Black Walnuts were planted. I am wondering how successful this planting was, and about how many living trees resulted. I am curious because I have tried to grow trees from seeds that I've gathered from many different local trees, including Black Walnut. I have not done well. The one thing I never thought of trying was...planting the seeds in the ground where I wanted the trees to be.

Jan, a neat trick to open walnuts(if you have a handy person with a strong wrist lying around) is to get a strong (thick tipped) fixed blade knife, insert it into the butt of the nut! and to twist. 9 times out of 10 it just pops neatly into 1/2's ;-)

P and B in Galion OH: I am sorry for not replying sooner. I just now saw your comment. The commuters hate me and play tricks on me. Your aunt is quite right. I am crazy. When I see what passes for sanity in today's world, I am glad to be crazy. Gene Logsdon

Holy Crap! I just read the recipe for Carol's cake ...! I think I actually have all the ingredients for it "on hand." If I can only get Andy to crack me a cup'o'walnuts, I'm in business. Cracking a cup of walnuts will take quite some time and effort ... as you well know! Save me a piece of that cake for our next happy hours! Happy Holidaze!

Hello Gene and Carol. We so enjoyed meeting you at the Mansfield Barnes and Noble last spring.

I told my aunt, a longtime Carey resident now in her 80s, that you were my hero and she said, "Gene Lodgsdon? Oh, he's crazy!" LOL.

A blessed Advent and Merry Christmas to you.
